Eric Schmidt, Google chairman, confirmed that a new version of Android, the operating system in Mountain View for mobile devices, will be released between October and November, as reported by Forbes.
The new Android, codenamed "Ice Cream Sandwiches", will serve to reduce the current fragmentation level operating system present in the various devices that support the OS from Google and compete in a "unified" with the new iOS Apple 5 to be launched around the same time.
In contrast to what happens with iOS, currently version of Android for tablet (codenamed "Honeycomb") is substantially different than that of smartphones (known as the "Gingerbread") which makes it harder for developers to create applications for both platforms.
Already in the past few months had been circulating rumors that Google was going to prepare for the launch of the new operating system by the end of the year and Schmidt's comment seems to confirm the initial speculation by restricting the release date to a period more accurately. The first smartphone with "Ice Cream Sandwich" could be presented at the launch of the new operating system, first of all the Google Nexus Prime racing from product with Samsung.
Despite the wide spread of Android has passed in recent months as the number of iOS device that support, the Android Market has yet to take off than the more popular and profitable Apple App Store. With the introduction of the new Google Android will also significantly reduce this gap, to subtract to Apple market share in the global mobile ecosystem to remain firmly in the hands of the company in Cupertino.
