Ford’s Driving Skills For Life Trains Teens To Become Safer Drivers

With high school proms and graduation coming up, parents are likely to relax the rules and give their teens more latitude and driving privileges. Yet the fact is that a 16-year-old is ten times more likely to become involved in a crash as an adult driver, and crashes are the number one killer of teens aged 15 to 20, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).Maybe a little hands-on driving experience taught by professional driving instructors can help make a difference and avoid tragedy.
That’s the intent behind the Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) program, developed with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). During the month of April, Ford DSFL will provide more than 1,000 teens advanced safe driving skills during free, hands-on driving modules.
Ford DSFL will visit schools in Spokane and Washington’s Tri-Cities with an entire day filled with multifaceted activities focused on four key areas: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed and space management, and driver distraction.
High school teams in Illinois that have developed winning safety campaigns will be awarded the opportunity to learn new skills from professional drivers on a specially equipped course.
Ford issues $100,000 in grants
There’s more going on this month as Ford awards a total of $100,000 in grants to GSHA members in the states of Minnesota, New York, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin to conduct teen safe driving initiatives that incorporate the DSFL program. Each highway safety agency will receive $20,000.
Recognized as the nation’s most comprehensive driving skills programs, the Ford DSFL has trained more than 500,000 new drivers to-date through its professional hands-on drivers instruction and web-based curriculum. Learn more about the program at www.drivingskillsforlife.com.

Ford’s EcoBoost named among Ward’s 10 Best Engines

The four-cylinder EcoBoost engine set to power the Ford Falcon in 2012 has been named among this year’s Ward’s 10 Best Engines.

The 179kW/366Nm tune of the 2.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine was awarded for its application in the North American Ford Edge SUV. The Falcon EcoBoost is expected to get a slightly different tune of the engine – potentially matching the European Mondeo’s 177kW/340Nm output – although the basic construction is shared with the award-winning powerplant in the Edge.

The judges said the engine earned a prize for its “uncanny ability to motivate the Edge”; a mid-size SUV “that normally would require six-cylinder power but does quite fine without it”.

Ford was awarded a second gong for the 331kW/515Nm naturally aspirated V8 in the Ford Mustang Boss 302.

 

Seven of the 10 Best Engines feature direct fuel injection, and half are either turbocharged or supercharged.

Five four-cylinder engines were awarded, up from three in last year’s 10 Best list.

The 3.0-litre TFSI V6 was awarded for the third consecutive year, this year for its “ability to quicken any pulse with a blip of the throttle” in the 231kW/441Nm Audi A6. Ward’s also praised the engine’s versatility, noting that it is also put to work in the A7, Q7 and Porsche and Volkswagen vehicles.

Awarded for its 5.0-litre Tau V8 engine in the past three years, Hyundai-Kia’s 1.6-litre Gamma four-cylinder was the smallest-capacity winner on the 2012 list. Ward’s praised the engine for its versatility, efficiency and excellent value proposition in the Accent and Soul.

The judges tested 34 new or significantly upgraded engines in the 18th year of the 10 Best Engines awards. Each powerplant was scored according to its power, technology, fuel economy, and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics. To be eligible, the engines need to go on sale in the US no later than the first quarter of 2012, and the vehicles must have a base price of no more than US$55,000.
