Is This the Last Great iPhone Launch?

The more things change, a wise man once wrote, the more they stay the same. No doubt he was contemplating the day when the arrival of yet another iPhone would be a mundane thing.

Okay, maybe Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (the guy who coined plus ça change) wasn’t quite that foresighted. But eventually, sooner rather than later, the iPhone line is going to run out of changes that are interesting to the majority of us.

That won’t stop it being the best (or bestselling) smartphone in the world. It just makes it a mature product, like the Macbook. More evolution, less revolution.

Consider the screen resolution. Once Apple hit upon the retina display in the iPhone 4, it had by definition squeezed in more pixels than the human eye could account for. The iPhone 4S could look no sharper, and the iPhone 5 — if that is what it is called — cannot either. Apple had to settle for retina-izing the iPad and Macbook.

By most accounts, the iPhone 5 will boast an elongated display, allowing you to watch video in 16:9 aspect ratio without letterboxing. (Translation: it’s going to look more like a movie screen or HDTV). But here also we have a human limitation.

The 16:9 ratio is the standard for modern TV shows and DVDs, and roughly the standard for movies, for a reason. It fits snugly in our field of vision. And when applied to the current iPhone, it hits the upper limit of what fits in our pockets.

So then what? I doubt that Apple will ever produce an iPhone that is larger in width than the current model. Android phones go there, not to mention the tablet-smartphone hybrid Galaxy Note (which also just upgraded to a 16:9 ratio). They all feel unwieldy in the palm, or require two hands to operate.

Apple could have made a wider iPhone many models ago. Why haven’t they? Because, as at least one analyst has said, the company takes one-handed iPhone use “very seriously.” Jonny Ive, in other words, wants you to be able to stretch the thumb of the holding hand to all corners of the screen, so your other hand is always free to do whatever your busy life dictates it do.

Again, we’re running into real human design constraints here: retinas and opposable thumbs.

What else is left to upgrade? You’ll have noticed that the storage capacity of iPhones hasn’t changed in a few models; they range from 8GB to 64GB. And there doesn’t seem to be much of a clamor for anything larger.

Once upon a time, many of us may have wished for a 128GB iPhone. I know I did. But with the advent of cloud storage — in particular, iTunes Match — this matters less and less. I haven’t needed to free up room on my iPhone 4S 64GB in the last year, which surprised me. I have deleted a little-used space-hogging game or two, confident in the fact that I can always re-download it for free.

How about the wireless technology that drives the phone itself? Well, we’re likely to see a great leap forward from 3G to LTE (Long Term Evolution) in the iPhone 5. Not only is LTE way faster than 3G, it is in theory faster than most Wi-fi. That’s a big wow factor, right there.

But what comes after that? Well, there’s an even faster technology called, not surprisingly, LTE Advanced. That is going to take years to roll out — and is, as far as the average user is concerned, an incremental improvement. You can’t see it making a whole lot of headlines in the mainstream press.

At a certain point, the devices in our pockets become speedy enough that they can handle pretty much anything we can throw at them, and the only constraints are app makers’ imaginations and carrier bandwidth. That’s a very real and ongoing story, but it will no longer be the iPhone’s story.

Apple is reportedly holding back NFC (Near Field Communications) technology, on which it has several patents, from the iPhone 5. So you may have to wait until the iPhone 5S or 6, if that naming convention continues, until you can pay for products by waving your phone.

But here again, I think, we run into a human limitation. NFC has been around for years. So have smart credit cards with radio chips, where you tap to pay. And when was the last time you did that?

There is such a thing as payment with too little friction. We like the solidity of swiping a credit card; you have to be pretty certain about your purchase to do that. We fear a system that could be manipulated, where accounts could be charged without our say-so — or without enough thought on our part, which could be just as dangerous.

Even if NFC is the tent-pole feature of the next iPhone after this, it’s not a whole lot to hang a launch event on.

Battery life can improve, of course. But Lithium-ion, the dominant battery technology of the last two decades, has hit something of a wall, something seemingly inherent in chemistry. Absent a scientific breakthrough, battery improvements are all going to be on the software side — doing more with less power.

The device could get lighter, certainly, and thinner, possibly — although you still need space for a power button, a lock button, a headphone jack, a dock connector and volume controls. (It really doesn’t get much thinner than the iPod Touch.)

But again, really, these are incremental improvements. Like the chips on the inside, they’re always going to be interesting to the Apple cognoscenti — not so much to the audience at large. We’ll care more and more about iOS 6 and its inheritors; not so much about the iPhone 6.

That’s why we’re being teased with the possibility of truly new Apple products, such as the iPad Mini or iTV, later this year. These are the launches that will remain a big deal — when Apple, the world’s most obsessively design-minded mass-market company, tackles an entirely new category.

The iPhone, meanwhile, can follow the iPod, the iMac and Macbook into its golden years — where its look is pretty much settled, its place in tech history assured, and all that remains is a long, comfortable life of incremental iteration.

Pour your onion mixture into the soapy water, and put it in a spray bottle. You can use this environmentally friendly spray to keep insects off of your plants.

Love your hamburgers and hot dogs as much as I do? Then you have a very dirty BBQ! Give your grill the green clean and and refrain from using chemicals — remove baked-on grease and grime with an onion. For the best results, heat up your BBQ, then use a fork to hold half of an onion to scrub the grill.

Did you know onions can be used to make beautiful marble-dyed Easter eggs? It's as simple as wrapping eggs in onion skins, typing them up in a towel to secure them, and boiling as usual. It’s simple, powerful, and for m,e has been a reliable way to recover data.

These days I find myself relying primarily on Time Machine for backing up data. Time Machine, however, doesn’t always provide the flexiblility that is required for some tasks. This is where Carbon Copy Cloner comes in. Carbon Copy Cloner features the ability to back up to additional drives that Time Machine sometimes can’t access. It can be scheduled to back up at specific times, and is great for making a bootable backup of your existing drives.

TechTool Protogo is a great utility that you can take with you. Much like the aforementioned utilities, TechTool Protogo is great for scanning hard drives, testing hardware, backing up, and much more — only without the need to install it directly to a potentially unresponsive Mac. Just install the suite of tools on a USB thumb drive and take it with you.

iStat Pro is one of my favorite utilities. iStat is a simple widget that can be installed into Dashboard and is a powerful utility for accessing system information in a flash. It’s great for monitoring Wi-Fi signal strength, hardware temperatures, hard drive capacity and usage, and so much more. You can even install iStat Pro for iPhone and monitor your Macs remotely!

N0tice is another innovative project that it is trialling, and it has real potential to take news reporting, and news gathering, in some interesting new directions.

N0tice is essentially an online community noticeboard, upon which news, details of events, and local special offers can be posted for other users. Still in private beta, the service isn’t labeled as a Guardian project, taking more of the appearance of a small startup.

Once it’s determined your location, the Web app displays local news, offers and events in both list and map views. In my local area at the time of writing, there are currently reports of recent crimes, flats offered for rent and a family art workshop promoted in the events section. The service is monetised via a fee for businesses that wish to advertise.

For this reason, the researchers introduced probability maps that indicated the refrigerator and Subway are high probability sandwich locations. The maps can be updated say, if Subway closes, and like seemingly everything else modifications can be made from an iPad.

Semantic search is the latest creation from TUM’s Intelligent Autonomous Systems. The PR2 robot platform uses Robot Operating System-based software that TUM has already contributed to significantly. Semantic search can be combined with other code packets found in the treasure trove of ROS so the PR2 can cook you breakfast, fetch you a beer, or clean up after you in a smarter way. In a video we showed last year, the PR2 depended on a human to decide which cups and bottles on the table were to be cleared away for washing and which ones should stay. By increasing the specifications of semantic search the robot’s selectivity can be made finer so that, for instance, any cups that are half-full should remain.

If robots are going to work with us and for us they’re going to need the kind of common sense that semantic search gives them. If we have to tell the robot what room, what refrigerator, what shelf and what can of beer it needs to fetch we’re apt to do it ourselves.

Review: Quora’s new iPhone app is great for casual and experienced users

Quora, the much buzzed-about social question-and-answer service, has released an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, ending a long period of relative quiet from the company since it opened to the public over a year ago.

Quora users have long been able to use the company’s mobile-optimized HTML site, but a native app was one of Quora’s most popular requests.

I’ve been testing the beta version for nearly two months now and can confidently say that with its various new features, it finally delivers the goods to both casual users and more actively engaged ones. The site, known for its patronage by prominent Silicon Valley insiders and other noteworthy people, is maturing into the authoritative tome of knowledge its co-founders, former star Facebook engineers Adam D’Angelo and Charlie Cheever, originally envisioned.

When it debuted, Quora’s steep learning curve and elite user-base seemed too intense for some casual knowledge-seekers. But this app hopes to change all that. Here’s a look at some of its best new features and how they work:

Location-based Searches: The geolocation-aware “Nearby” feature pinpoints where you are on a map and brings up topics relevant to that area. This information is based on the crowd-sourced efforts of Quora’s web users, who assigned map locations to topics manually. The Nearby feature is useful for anyone on the go, especially travelers. If you’re heading to Shanghai, for example, you can use Nearby to find out which culture faux pas to avoid.

You can also move the map around to, “explore the world through the lens of Quora” according to mobile lead Anne Halsall. That experience is the type of novel app-candy more hardcore users of the site will definitely appreciate.



Speedy Response Times: The app is certainly fast enough to rival other sources of content — great when an answer is needed quickly. This is one of the most polished iPhone apps I’ve had the pleasure of using. Not only is it wicked fast, it’s also devoid of the usual opening-day bugs and crashes.

Refreshing content and notifications takes just a quick second, and page loads are just as lightning-fast. Search queries are similarly responsive. This is mostly thanks to predictive, pre-fetching systems that use pre-rendered web views, as well as tight integration with Apple’s Core Data development framework.

Slick User Interface: The app’s user interface borrows heavily from Quora’s cleverly streamlined website. If you’re outside of the app, push notifications will draw your attention back — useful when you’re away from your computer or have disabled email notifications from Quora.

Time-killing Shuffle Option: The mobile app also ports over the website’s Shuffle feature, which was mostly a novelty before. Its revamped implementation on the mobile app makes much more sense, since it’s a great way to kill time on your smartphone. Shuffle’s results are random at the moment, but the feature may be tweaked to support individual preferences in a future update.

An active member of Quora myself, I’ve found the app to be useful in a number of situations. My feed is packed with great reading material whenever I’ve got a free moment (side-note: many users have confessed to me that Quora has become their defacto bathroom reader). I can also ask questions (and hopefully get answers) as soon as they pop into my head. Lastly, I can resolve those pesky barroom debates that usually rely on Wikipedia or Google to break the impasse. The speed of this app makes “Let’s see what Quora has to say about that, mister!” a reality. It also helps that the service has been around long enough for it to be populated with good content.

I asked head of marketing, community and business operations Marc Bodnick about the site’s metrics and other information on traffic and revenue, but he was mum on the details. He did however stress that New York City is now its largest user-base by geography, proving that Quora’s starting to shed its Silicon Valley roots.

Bodnick said a tablet-optimized iPad app is still off the shelf for now, as are non-iOS platforms such as Android. “We want to bring the site to all the platforms our users embrace, but we do not have a specific timetable for any of those efforts,” he added.

Like Quora’s desktop site, the new app is available for free with no advertising. You can get it on the iTunes Store here (currently in English-speaking countries only).

How to Stay On-Task...Every Day

Do you have trouble staying focused?

Whether you work for yourself or for an employer, spending hours surfing the net and updating your Facebook profile won’t get you any closer to your goals ... yet you find it hard to keep on-task.

Even when you do try to concentrate, you might get to 5pm and feel like you’ve not accomplished anything.

Here’s how to stay focused and get more done – every day.

Minimize Interruptions
If you live alone and work from home, interruptions are unlikely to be a big problem. If you work in a busy office and your job involves a lot of reactive tasks, like answering phone calls or emails from clients, you might be getting interrupted every few minutes.

Your target isn’t to cut out interruptions altogether – that’s not realistic – but to get rid of as many as you can. Some good ways to start are:

• Close your email program – if necessary, check it once every 30 minutes to ensure there’s nothing genuinely urgent



• Let your phone go to voicemail – or ask a colleague to cover it for an hour or two. (You can always return the favor at a later point.)



• Shut your office door. If you work in an open-plan office with other colleagues, putting on headphones will make others think twice about interrupting you to chat: it doesn’t matter whether you’re actually listening to music or not.

Get Prepared
Some tasks need a lot of concentration – like writing a report, coming up with a plan, or analyzing some complex data. If you’re tackling one of those, you don’t want to be breaking off every few minutes to find the right file. You definitely don’t want to be re-opening your email program to search for a crucial bit of information.

Before you get started on a big task, take a few minutes to make sure:

• You’ve got the information you’ll need (e.g. pull up relevant documents, make a quick phone call or print out emails)



• You’re physically comfortable. Grab a glass of water or a coffee, get a snack, or go to the bathroom if necessary.



• You’ve cleared some space on your desk so that you can spread out any necessary files.

Avoid Distractions
There are plenty of tools that can help you to avoid distractions, like software to block certain internet sites (for all the Twitter addicts out there), or programs that run full-screen so that you only see what you’re working on.

If you find a tool that helps you, then use it, but remember that distractions don’t just come from your environment – they also pop up in your mind.

You might be bored or struggling on a task, and get the urge to check your email or just idly surf the net. You might suddenly remember something that you need to take care of.

A couple of things that you might helpful are:

1. Label the distraction in your mind. Think to yourself “I have an urge to check my email” or “I’m feeling the impulse to surf the net”. That might sound a bit daft (and you probably won’t want to start saying it out loud), but simply recognizing your tendency to get off-track can help you stay on the rails!



2. If you remember something that you need to take care of, make a note of it on a piece of paper or in your notebook. It can almost certainly wait an hour or two until you’ve finished your current task – and writing it down means that you can stop paying attention to it until then.

It’s hugely satisfying to finish your work day and feel a great sense of accomplishment. Cut out the interruptions and distractions that are knocking you off-task, and you’ll see how much more you can get done.

How Your Best Idea Is Holding You Back

Ideas are fantastic things. No book gets written, no business gets started, and no adventures get off the ground without someone having a great idea first. The problem is that ideas are bigger than we often give them credit for, and they have a shelf life.

Given enough time, the great idea that was going to change your life can end up being the very thing holding you back.

The first problem with ideas is that they take up a lot of mental space and energy. A novel comes with characters, plot, dialogue, twists, and sometimes a wholly different world than the one we live in. A business plan includes ideas for products or services, marketing strategies, pricing (and profit!) daydreams, and so on. That’s a lot to keep in mind all the time! While we may be capable of generating hundreds of great ideas, the chance that we can concentrate on more than one in detail is extremely slim.

The other problem is that having one solid, unused idea can chip away at your creativity. Here’s how: It’s too tempting to rest on the thought that you were creative enough to think of that first idea. Eventually, you’re still be congratulating yourself for a thought you had months or even years ago, instead of challenging yourself to be creative in the present. The longer you have your best plans tucked away, the less you’ll feel like pushing yourself to come up with something different.

So how do you keep your amazing idea from restricting your mental and creative energy? Act on it. As long as ideas remain passive, abstract thoughts, they’re useless. Taking steps to put your idea into action boosts creativity and motivation, frees you to brainstorm new possibilities, not to mention lets you actually enjoy the exciting experience you’ve been dreaming of for so long. Even failure isn’t a bad thing. If you find out the idea isn’t as good as you originally thought, you have the feedback and incentive you need to think of something that will work better.

Here are some ways to get your idea out fast:

• Give yourself an immediate deadline.
  “Write my novel this year” won’t work. “Write first chapter this month” is better. “Write my first page today” pushes you to start now. Break large projects into bite size pieces not only do you see immediate results, you reduce the fear of movement. (This can, of course, be customized for any goal—cook one recipe, write a business plan, compare prices for plane tickets to Bali—just get started today!)
  
  
• Get community support.
  Writer? Try National Novel Writing Month. Want to start your own business? Join an organization for small business owners. Connecting to others who share your goals is a great way to get encouragement, feedback, and motivation. Many times, this could be as simple as joining a group on Linkedin.
  
  
• Forget “going to be.”
  If you practice guitar today, you’re not going to be a musician, you are one. If you write (even 100 words), you are a writer. “Going to be” puts your goal in an indefinite future. If you’re working on your passion, you are already behaving like the person you want to be.
