SpaceX Founder: ‘I’m Overwhelmed With Joy’

Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, is on cloud nine after his company’s Dragon spacecraft successfully splashed down in the Pacific Ocean late Thursday morning.

“This has been a fantastic day,” said Musk during a press debriefing held a few hours after the landing. “I’d like to thank NASA and the whole SpaceX team for doing an amazing job. This really couldn’t have gone better. I’m just overwhelmed with joy.”

Musk admitted that he spent most of the mission thinking about what could go wrong with the flight.

“When you’ve been deeply involved in the design of a complex machine, when you see it operate, you know all the things that can go wrong,” said Musk. “When I was looking at the rocket and the spacecraft, I was thinking about the thousands of ways it could fail. This may sound sort of odd, but when you see it actually work you’re sort of surprised.

“Which is not to say that we didn’t expect it work,” added Musk, “you can just see see so many ways it can fail and then you’re like, ‘wow, it didn’t fail.’”

The Dragon’s success is SpaceX’s gain. Alan Lindenmoyer, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew & Cargo Program, was gushing with optimism about SpaceX’s future role in delivering cargo to the International Space Station.

“We’ve been waiting for this day, and it’s a certainly been a tremendous day,” said Lindenmoyer during the debriefing. “We’re hoping to move forward now to routine regular cargo shipments. I don’t think it’s going to take us very long to make the formal determination that this was a very successful mission and that [SpaceX] is well on their way to start delivering regular services.”

Musk did, however, concede that the Dragon encountered at least one challenge while flying high above the Earth: a faulty laser-based guidance system created a minor hiccup during the birthing process. However, astronauts on board the ISS were able to correct the problem after the craft hooked up to the space station.

“On approach, we had slight trouble with LIDARs — laser-based radar,” said Musk. “It was a little flaky coming in, but we made adjustments while [Dragon] was on the ISS and eliminated that as a concern in the future.”

During the re-entry, Musk sat at SpaceX mission control in California, anxiously watching data sent from the Dragon tear across his monitors. However, he knew that if something went wrong at that point, there was very little he could do about it. He didn’t relax until he saw the main parachutes deploy, to him an indication that everything would be fine.

Musk called the mission a “grand slam” overall, adding that he hoped it would inspire young people to join the space industry.

“I hope that today’s events were really inspiring, and I encourage people to go into the space industry,” said Musk. “I think we’re at the dawn of a new era in space travel where there’s going to be a huge opportunity and lots of things happening.”

Up next for Musk?

“We’ll continue to upgrade the technology and push the frontier of space exploration,” he said, referring to hauling more than just cargo to the International Space Station, but launching astronauts and satellites into space as well.

SpaceX mission makes history: docking successful

This morning NASA confirmed that the SpaceX mission sending the Dragon had officially been captured as well as completely docked with the ISS – history has been made! The first of two stages of docking was made 10:52 AM CST, the second at 11:02 AM CST, both stages needed at the International Space Station before the pod can be officially docked and the mission can be seen as a success. This docking comes after a single missed opportunity launch on Earth followed by a successful launch, this making SpaceX the first commercial group to launch and successfully attach to the ISS.

This is a historic day for NASA as well as the whole earth as we enter a whole new age of space travel with private groups working directly with government-run space missions. Though we have had rockets sent to space before from non-government sources, this is the first time private and public groups have attached directly. SpaceX has previously launched rockets into space with payloads that included ashes of private citizens.

*Fun fact: this mission also included ashes of private citizens including the actor that played Scotty in the original Star Trek television series.

“We have confirmation at 10:52 of a nominal first-stage capture” was the first of two announcements made in this docking process, the last process that had to be made before the Dragon pod was officially attached to the ISS. At 11:02 CST the official call was made and the mission was complete, the entire mission taking 3 days 8 hours 18 minutes from start to finish. SpaceX, NASA, and of course SlashGear celebrate on this fabulous day for space travel!

SpaceX docks with ISS: “Looks like we caught a Dragon by the tail”

NASA and SpaceX have made history today, with the International Space Station reaching out and grappling the Dragon capsule with its robotic arm. The culmination of a three day flight and numerous tests of the safety functionality necessary to protect both Dragon and the ISS, the team aboard the orbiting space platform guided the robotic arm to pluck the capsule out of the sky at 9:56 ET this morning.

In the hours preceding the successful grapple, SpaceX gradually piloted the capsule in toward the ISS, pausing at the 250m hold-off zone while NASA did further tests. Astronaut Don Pettit was responsible for controlling the robotic arm that picked up Dragon.

Next up comes the equally lengthy process of pulling Dragon into the ISS, and temporarily installing it onto the Harmony node. That’s expected to to take a further few hours.

In the end, the astronaut may go down in history for coining the 21st century equivalent of “One small step for man,” as famously said by Neil Armstrong on the first moon landing. “Houston Station, looks like we caught a Dragon by the tail” he told ground control.

NASA has already inked a contract with SpaceX to run a total of twelve missions to the International Space Station, sending up supplies and scientific equipment now that the space agency’s own Space Shuttles have been grounded.

SpaceX historic ISS launch streams live from NASA

Starting this afternoon we’ll we’ll be keeping our eyes toward the heavens as the historic International Space Station-bound launch of the SpaceX program streams live via NASA‘s own video portal. This launch will take place at 4:55 a.m. EDT and will be inside what’s called an “Instantaneous Launch Window” – this essentially meaning that if they can’t get a perfect launch time, they’ve got to move to their backup date, May 22nd in this case. This mission is important to the history of space travel and science in general because it will be the first Commercial Company ever to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station – and we can’t wait to see it go well!

This launch will be pushing the company’s Falcon 9 rocket into space with their Dragon spacecraft ready to make the journey all the way to the ISS this month. Elon Musk, owner and chief designer for Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) is one of the centers of interest here because of his Tony Stark-like real life and history with blockbuster tech projects such as SpaceX as and Tesla Motors. Currently SpaceX is getting lots of help from NASA engineers and flight controllers as they work hand-in-hand with the private company to coordinate efforts and reach a successful launch, birthing, and completion. If successful, this will be the first in a long line of NASA-funded cargo deliveries to the ISS. NASA’s COTS space act agreements to SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corporation have started this ecosystem up in recent years with this mission being a beacon for their future collaborations.

SpaceX test flight to ISS aborted

SpaceX has again been forced to abort its planned mission to dock with the International Space Station, with the private spaceflight company’s latest delay being as close to lift-off as possible. The unmanned Falcon 9 rocket had ignited its nine main engines earlier this morning and was T minus 0.5 seconds to launch when engineers aborted due to “slightly high combustion chamber pressure on engine 5? SpaceX said. However, a new attempt could be as early as a few days time.

“Will adjust limits for countdown in a few days” SpaceX tweeted, after the launch at 4:15AM Eastern was cut short at the last minute. No specific explanation for what happened to the fifth engine has been given.

However, the firm is keen to point out that today’s result should not be considered a failure. “We aborted with purpose” SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell told MSNBC. ”It would have been a failure if we had lifted off with an engine trending in this direction.”

The mission was an important – and much delayed – one for SpaceX, as it was intended to demonstrate that, with the aid of the six astronauts and cosmonauts currently on the International Space Station (ISS), a private, unmanned craft could successfully dock with the orbiting platform. SpaceX and NASA intend to use the ship to run supply missions among other things, now that the Space Shuttle has been officially retired, with a $1.6bn contract already agreed upon for twelve missions.

SpaceX’s next opportunity for the launch is Tuesday, May 22, at 12:44AM Pacific. The company has been forced to delay this test flight on several previous occasions, citing final tweaks of the rockets and software as the primary cause for postponement.
