Microsoft officially leaving Windows 8 Metro brand in the dust

Microsoft confirmed today that it will indeed be ditching the Metro branding for Windows 8, and said it plans to introduce a new brand sometime later this week. We had a feeling that something like this was going to happen, thanks to this week’s leak of internal Microsoft memos which signaled such a change. Apparently, Microsoft’s decision to dump the branding comes from talks with “an important European partner” that left the company without much choice in the matter. To put it simply, Microsoft probably picked the term “Metro” without realizing that one its partners already held the trademark.

So, now Windows 8 will get a bit of new branding. Metro was the term Microsoft used to describe the design and feel of Windows 8 and Windows RT, and don’t expect the phrase to disappear overnight. Microsoft hit the ground running with this branding, mentioning the name Metro at every chance. Now that the term Metro has been used so much, it’s going to be incredibly hard for Microsoft to flush it from the minds of those who have been following the development of Windows 8.

ComputerWorld points out that the “important European partner” may be Germany-based Metro AG. The company is the fifth-largest retailer in the world, so it isn’t hard to imagine why it might be upset with Microsoft’s choice of branding in this instance. Neither company will confirm nor deny this speculation, and Microsoft says that this change was not brought on by litigation. If the two companies were at odds over the Metro brand, Microsoft seems to have diffused the situation before it ended up in a court room.

We won’t be waiting long for this new brand to arrive, as Microsoft’s announcement that it will be coming “this week” means that the company will be revealing it either later today or tomorrow. Once this new brand arrives, expect Microsoft to begin using it as much as humanly possible. We’ll have details on this new brand for you once Microsoft makes its announcement, so keep it tuned right here to SlashGear.

Flipboard for Android officially released

Flipboard for Android has officially been released, hitting the Play Store after several weeks of leaky exclusivity on Samsung’s Galaxy S III. The socially-enabled news reader app pulls in content from RSS, Facebook and Twitter, and – thanks to a deal announced this week – adds Google+ to that list. Meanwhile, an update for iPhone and iPad brings Google+ sync to iOS too.

Samsung had originally inked a deal with Flipboard’s developers to make the app an exclusive to the Korean company’s new flagship. That didn’t stop Android owners, though, who quickly sourced the APK  and circulated it to those without a Galaxy S III.

Now it’s officially available to all, though currently optimized for smartphones rather than tablets. Flipboard does have a version for the iPad, but it’s unclear whether the company believes the Android tablet market is sufficiently broad to make developing a tab-friendly interface for it.

Flipboard for Android is a free download for the Play Store. You can find out more in our review of the earlier Flipboard for Android beta.

Lexus LF-LC concept officially revealed

Lexus has decided to release an image of the new Lexus LF-LC concept it plans to unveil at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, after images of the concept were leaked online earlier this week.

Road & Track magazine in the US initially found images of the elegant and extravagant new coupe and posted them onto its YouTube channel, and on the front cover of its magazine. This pretty much forced Lexus into revealing shots of its own. Some details of the coupe have been confirmed with the official release.

The Lexus LF-LC concept will be a 2+2 coupe, using a hybrid drive system. The concept also previews a fresh design direction for Lexus, and is expected to spawn a new luxury production coupe in the future. Lexus Australia chief executive Tony Cramb said,

“A clean sheet of paper design, coming at the request of Lexus headquarters in Japan, LF-LC combines Lexus technological expertise with natural, organic shapes to connect car and driver.

“The lines of the car are designed to emphasise motion, which creates a distinctive look for this futuristic sport coupe.”

Lexus is in need of a new luxury grand touring coupe – a replacement to the Lexus SC430 of 2005 – and one that will slot beneath the mega Lexus LFA in terms of price and specification.

The concept will be unveiled at the Detroit show at 6:25am (AEDST) on January 10. Look forward to our full coverage.
