5 Reasons HTML5 Apps are Hard to Monetize

Even though the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) doesn’t expect full HTML5 implementation until 2022, there is no shortage of great apps out there already based on HTML5. This is because HTML5 offers some distinct advantages over its counterparts, including improved graphics and animations, dynamic data storage features, and geolocation support.

That said, some hurdles remain, particularly with apps. Below are five big reasons why HTML5 apps are difficult to monetize.

HTML5 app discovery is extremely tough for one big reason: There are no well-known sites where you can find them. Sure, Facebook’s App Center and the Mozilla Marketplace offer HTML5 apps, but most people aren’t aware that these sites exist, and they aren’t optimized for mobile devices.

This is a huge issue. If no one knows where to find your app, or that you even have an app, distribution and promotion suffers and it’s impossible to ever gain a substantial number of users.

Developing HTML5 apps is not as straightforward as building desktop web apps. In the mobile world, there are multiple operating systems, a number of different browsers, various screen sizes, and thousands of devices that developers have to consider.

With a great deal of complex animation and graphics running on mobile web apps, the user experience on an unsupported browser or device can suffer. Frameworks like PhoneGap and Sencha are great tools, but there is still a lot of room for improvement, and they will need support from browsers and device markers. Without their support, it is very difficult to achieve the build-once, deploy-everywhere ideal.

The advertising model for native apps is expansive, well defined, and can be very lucrative. It’s also something that’s been cultivated over several years and has healthy competition and diversity among the players.

But there is not yet a standardized ad platform that enables advertisers to develop one HTML5 ad and deploy it on multiple Apple, Android, BlackBerry or Windows devices. A few companies are starting to build their own HTML5 ad networks, but there is no model that those developers are comfortable with and that have demonstrated profitability.

When the latest version of Angry Birds goes live, users need only jump into their respective app store and within a click or two the app is purchased and loaded on their phone. Their credit card information is saved in the app store, which users tend to trust as a secure environment, making app purchases as safe and easy as it gets.

There are a number of payment tools out there for web apps, but there is no standardized payment framework that is secure or easy enough for prime time. The Chrome Web Store integrates Google Checkout, but it’s a vendor-locked solution and not accessible to everyone. Unless the HTML5 community can find a way to replicate the native app payment process — or define a new, secure and convenient way — consumers are going to be uncomfortable.

People understand how native apps work — download them from a marketplace directly to the phone’s home screen — and are comfortable with them. They see the process as a simple, safe, and painless one. But downloading HTML5 apps is a different process, one consumers are not used to and, thus far, have been reluctant to try.

The larger question, though, may be whether consumers will adopt a more web-oriented view of the world, one where apps are downloaded through a browser, or whether HTML5 will instead interact with native apps to form a hybrid environment.

The benefits of HTML5 are clear — write once, deploy everywhere — but there are still many monetization, performance, and technical limitations that are preventing the mobile community from going “all in.”

Google grabs HP webOS Enyo HTML5 team

Google has quietly snatched up the HP team responsible for the webOS Enyo HTML5 project, it’s been revealed, with the search giant expected to use their expertise in Android, ChromeOS and other products. Initially believed to be the bulk of the team, according to The Verge, then narrowed down to roughly half a dozen by AllThingsD - including project chief Matt McNulty – the ship-jumping was not apparently done all at once, but after a series of individual hires. However, HP says its open-source webOS plans are still on track.

“We’re pleased with the traction Enyo has gained to date and plan to continue its development along with the open source community” HP said in a statement. “The Open webOS project is on schedule and we remain committed to the roadmap announced in January.”

That project has seen HP take the OS it acquired from Palm and attempt to repackage it for the open-source community, with Open WebOS heavily dependent on Enyo for its app and browser rendering. Downloads of Enyo had already numbered 40,000 just three weeks after its release earlier in the year, but the shift of much of the team responsible had left concerns that HP would not be able to continue its progress.

Still, you can’t fault the Enyo team for looking beyond HP; the company had already laid off 275 webOS employees back in February. According to insiders, Google individually negotiated each new hire over the course of several months, and the team is expected to regroup within the search giant in June.

A year and a half after Steve Jobs endorsed it in an unusual essay, a set of programming techniques called HTML5 is rapidly winning over the Web.

The technology allows Internet browsers to display jazzed-up images and effects that react to users’ actions, delivering game-like interactivity without installing additional software. Developers can use HTML5 to get their creations on a variety of smartphones, tablets and PCs without tailoring apps for specific hardware or the online stores that have become gatekeepers to mobile commerce.

That promise—and the lure of Apple Inc. devices in particular—is sweeping aside alternative technologies. In the latest development, Adobe Systems Inc. said Wednesday it will pull back on pushing the rival Flash format opposed by Mr. Jobs for mobile devices.

“HTML5 is a major step forward,” declares venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who helped invent the first successful browser, Netscape, in the 1990s.

Another Silicon Valley investor, Roger McNamee, predicts the technology will let artists, media companies and advertisers differentiate their Web offerings in ways that weren’t practical before. “HTML5 is going to put power back in the hands of creative people,” he says.

Many companies are placing bets. Amazon.com Inc. used HTML5 for a Web-based app called Kindle Cloud Reader that sidesteps Apple rules for selling content on its iPhone and iPads.

Offline Gmail Returns, Sort of

Offline Gmail is back. Originally built around Google’s Gears plugin, the company announced earlier this year that it was pulling the Gears-based feature and rewriting it to use HTML5 and web standards. Now offline Gmail is back (along with offline support for Google Docs and Calendar) and no longer requires the Gears browser add-on.
Offline Gmail does, however, require the Google Chrome web browser. In fact, the offline version of Gmail is an entirely separate app you’ll need to install through the Chrome Web Store. The Web Store app is based on the Gmail web app for tablets and uses a widescreen layout that will look familiar to anyone using Gmail on an iPad or the new three-pane mail interface.
