Game of Phones: How the World Downloads iOS, Android Apps

Although Apple’s mobile operating system iOS is still leading the app-downloading market, Google’s Android platform is keeping up pace with its rival, according to a new infographic.

App Annie, a provider of app store analytics and intelligence for iOS, Mac and Android publishers, highlights in an infographic that iOS makes up 71% of global revenue for app downloads — compared to Android’s 29% share — but both companies are growing 14% year-over-year in revenue for app downloads.

“iOS publishers are undoubtedly making more money than Android publishers,” an App Annie spokesperson told Mashable. “But Android has shown impressive growth in the global market.”

In fact, Android app downloads in the U.S. represent 7% more of the download market compared to iOS apps.

The infographic also highlights how the world is currently downloading iOS and Android apps. The U.S. is the top country with iOS downloads, making up 28% of the global market, followed by China (18%) and Japan (7%). This indicates that iOS sees strong support in the bigger Asian markets. The remaining 48% comes from a collection of other countries. The U.S. is also the top country with Android downloads (35%), followed by the U.K. (10%) and Germany (6%).

In contrast, the fastest-growing countries by iOS revenue are Japan (no. 1), Russia (no. 2), the U.S. (no. 3) and France (no. 4). Android revenue is showing a lot of growth in developing markets such as Brazil.

The Future of Cell Phones


The future of cell phones is unpredictable as we all have seen its growth in the past few years. During the twentieth century, automobiles and the television created a revolution in the world. Can Sound Waves Charge Cell Phones?
We all know that the electrical energy that is stored in a battery is what fuels our cell phones. There is a new form of technology in which sound waves are converted into electrical energy which can charge our cell phones. This technology was experimented using zinc oxide which was placed between two electrodes. When sound waves hit the zinc oxide strands, it compresses first and then releases electrical energy. This electrical energy is stored and used in cell phones. The device can even pick up our voice signals or sound waves from our music players and get charged by itself. Though expected results were not attained, the technology is developing by altering the materials used.

The objective of the project is to produce an open alternative ubiquitous function of mobile phones in computing and the communication field.The Open Mobile Terminal Platform is supported by many mobile companies like Vodafone, Ericsson, Nokia, Hutchison 3G and Orange.LiMo Foundation creates an operating system for mobile phones, which is independent of the hardware being used.The Open Handset Alliance Group developed Android with 3D technology.

Though there are arguments asserting that cell phones are dangerous, it is still overlooked. The future of mobile phone technology is still evolving and scientists, engineers, and governments are envisioning the impact of mobile phones on an individual’s daily life. With the emergence of nanotechnology in the recent years, mobile phone technology is being combined with it to make voice communication, the display, and data exchange, perform better. Nowadays, the battery life of mobile phones is a big concern. Engineers and scientists are working on lithium-ion technology and finding ways to improve the battery life of cellphones. The future of mobile phones is vast and it is impossible to visualize a boundary in cell phone technology.

Heyzap creates game launcher for Android phones

Heyzap has released version 3 of its game check-in app, adding functions that make it a lot easier for gamers to manage and launch their games.

The Heyzap app for Android will include a new Play tab (pictured at right, bottom) that makes it simple for users to organize and launch all of their games from one convenient location. In doing so, the company is shifting further into helping both gamers and developers with the discovery of new games on mobile devices.

Jude Gomilla, co-founder of San Francisco-based Heyzap, said in an interview that the existing Android interface makes it hard to find and manage games. For instance, you have to click on menus a total of nine times just to delete a game from a phone.

With Heyzap’s app, you click on the app once. Then you hit the Z Play button at the bottom of the screen. That calls up all of your games, but in the order of the most frequently played first. With this scheme, you don’t have to go looking through a list of dozens of icons in order to find your favorite game. You can launch it with a single click.

“We can launch a game 10 times faster on Android,” Gomilla said. “We make games management much easier. We have become like a central hub for games.”

You can also click on other buttons that show your friends, your profile, or the latest activity, which shows which games your friends are playing. The Play tab will show you games that have new updates available. This kind of interface is increasingly necessary for people who have dozens of games on their phones, Gomilla said.

An iPhone update is coming soon. Gomilla said that the company is making money from the app by selling non-incentivized ads. Developers place those ads in part because Heyzap inspires users to install games that their friends are playing.

You can use the play tab to view information such as discussions about a game, tips for playing it, and how to connect to other players. Heyzap has about 1.6 million installations for its check-in app.

Heyzap launched its check-in app for mobile gamers in March and it has now evolved it into a social network for gamers. More than 600 games use the Heyzap software developer kit. Publishers and developers using it include Pocket Gems, Digital Chocolate, Animoca, Mega Jump, Office Zombie, and others. If developers integrate the SDK into the game, gamers can then check into games and broadcast what they are playing to Facebook, Twitter and the Heyzap network with the press of a button.

Heyzap has 18 employees and it has raised $3.65 million from investors including Union Square Ventures and Naval Ravikant of Angellist. The company was founded in 2008. The company started out creating widgets for flash games, but it has shifted entirely into the mobile social games market now. Rivals could potentially include both Google and Apple, which could improve their interfaces to absorb  what Heyzap does. But they aren’t doing that now. Other rivals include OpenFeint, PapayaMobile, and DeNA.

Nokia’s bold new Meltemi OS will make feature phones smarter

Nokia phones circa 2009 Not content to let its feature phone software stagnate, Nokia is apparently working on a new low-end mobile operating system called “Meltemi,” which will allow the company to sell more capable phones in emerging markets.

News of the Linux-based Meltemi, which is the Greek word for winds that blow across the Aegean see from the north during summer, was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

For Nokia, Meltemi is a sign that the company isn’t forgetting about low-end devices, a segment which represented about 47 percent of its device sales last quarter. It’s also a strong hint that the company isn’t willing to be entirely on another company’s platform. Nokia recently abandoned its plans to develop the MeeGo operating system with Intel (though it is releasing a single MeeGo device for some reason, the N9) in exchange for adopting Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform.

Meltemi will allow Nokia to continue innovating with low-end feature phones — which is important, since consumers in emerging markets expect smartphone-like functionality from their feature phones, a source tells the WSJ. Developing a new OS will let Nokia offer those devices at cheaper prices than if they used Windows Phone 7, which requires beefier hardware and licensing fees to Microsoft. As the WSJ points out, Meltemi could be Nokia’s equivalent of Samsung’s Bada platform for low-end phones.

The new software will completely replace Nokia’s S40 software in feature phones, according to the mobile site Boy Genius Report. “Nokia’s vision is seemingly to build an operating system with capability that reaches well beyond “S40,” but that can function on similar low-cost hardware,” writes BGR’s Zach Epstein. “This new platform will be fairly capable, but our understanding is that it will not be a full-fledged OS intended to compete with the likes of Android, iOS and Windows Phone.”

Nokia will still develop inexpensive Windows Phone devices in some markets, BGR says. That will likely happen with Microsoft’s recently announced “Tango” version of the OS, which offers a stripped down experience for low-end hardware.

Nokia has yet to confirm Meltemi’s existence, but a spokesperson told BGR in a statement “our Mobile Phones team has a number of exciting projects in the works that will help connect the next billion consumers to the Internet.”

BlackBerry fights back with launch of four new models

Research in Motion’s global rollout of its newest line of BlackBerry smart-phones arrived in Paris where the company unveiled a quartet of new devices on Wednesday. All four phones are the latest effort on the part of the once dominant Waterloo, Ontario-based telecom manufacturer to reverse a steady decline in overall market shares, in what has been described as the largest release in BlackBerry’s history.

The four new phones are each targeting a different demographic. In contrast with Apple that focuses on the high end of the market with its popular, and comparatively expensive, iPhone, BlackBerry is gambling that it can produce devices that appeal to everyone from cost-conscious teenagers to corporate executives.

High-end users have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Bold 9900, its top of the line model that combines a touch-screen with BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard. The device has been re-designed inside and outside with sleeker hardware and the new BlackBerry 7 operating system.

With BlackBerry 7, RIM has opted for enhanced integration with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc…), more applications that rely on voice activation and social networking, particularly across its popular BlackBerry Messenger network.

The French version of the Bold 9900 is priced €199 if bought with a contract.

Competing in a crowd
BlackBerry faces considerably more competition among mid-priced phones where Android-powered devices have been gobbling up market shares. Its new Torch models 9860 and 9810, both also running on BlackBerry 7, are seemingly aimed at new smartphone consumers who want to retain their access to the BlackBerry Messenger network’s 45 million users while enjoying many of the app-based features popular on the iPhone and Android devices.

the 9860 is an entirely touch-screen phone, the 9810 is a slider device that offers both a keyboard and touch-screen. Neither of these devices revealed any significant hardware enhancements over their predecessors. Instead, the key selling point for BlackBerry here appears to be that it makes its BB 7 OS available at a lower price.

One of the key challenges for all of BlackBerry’s mid-range product line is how it effectively differentiates itself in a market that is increasingly defined by the number and quality of mobile applications, or apps. With only 35,000 apps for sale in its BlackBerry App World marketplace, the company offers just a tenth of the number of applications available on the Apple App Store or the Android Marketplace.

The low end
While Apple dominates the top of the smartphone market and Android devices have become increasingly popular in the mid-range, BlackBerry’s low-priced curve models have been hugely successful among teens and other price-sensitive consumers. The BlackBerry’s Curve models are often available for just €1 with a contract and offer unlimited texting within the company’s messaging network.

As for its more expansive brethren, the Bold 9900, BlackBerry did both a hardware and software makeover for the considerably cheaper Curve 9360. Powered by an 800 megahertz processor running BlackBerry 7 OS, the Curve 9360 is a device that emphasizes texting and messaging above all else and is ideal for that consumer who prefers type over talk.

BlackBerry’s BIG problem
BlackBerry has long been popular with corporate and government clients who value the device’s emphasis on text-based encrypted messaging. BlackBerry’s closed network architecture offers a degree of security that is unparalleled in the industry, making the device a popular choice among corporate technology managers.

Servicing large governmental, financial and other corporate clients has been a major part of BlackBerry’s success but as employees of these organizations push back on carrying around two smartphone devices, one personal the other professional, a growing number of IT managers are abandoning their once exclusive loyalty to BlackBerry.

The crux of the problem is that a company-provided phone often has so many restrictions on it that it is not practical for personal use. Conversely, personal smartphones, such as the iPhone, often lack the necessary security features that are essential to protect a company’s network from viruses or unauthorized penetration from the outside.

“Clearly we are aware of this trend,” said David Derrida, Director of Carrier Product Management at BlackBerry’s parent company Research in Motion, “and since last year we’ve been developing 'BlackBerry Balance' that effectively creates a wall between the user’s personal and professional worlds on their device.”

Derrida no doubt hopes that initiatives such as ‘Balance’ will help slow BlackBerry’s steady erosion and give a badly needed boost to its ailing stock price. With its shares now priced less than half of what they were last year, Research in Motion has a lot at stake with this latest product launch, or else it may be one of their last as an independent company.
